Get Involved
There are a variety of ways talented, motivated high school and college students can get involved with Breakthrough New Haven!
Summer Program Teacher
One purpose of Breakthrough is to prepare college students and high school juniors and seniors for careers in education. We encourage all prospective teachers to apply; no prior teaching experience is necessary. Before the students arrive, we provide teachers with an instensive eight-day orientation. Teachers receive continued instruction as the summer progresses. And guidance from mentor teachers who are full-time professional teachers. The mentor teachers assist Breakthrough teachers in planning curriculum and designing lesson plans, and evaluates classes. Teachers are responsible for teaching two classes, advising/counseling 3 or 4 students, and participating in field trips and other co-curricular activities.

After School Program Teacher
We also encourage college and high school students to apply to teach in our weekly After-School Program classes. Classes are focused primarily on developing and refining academic skills in preparation for college preparatory high school curricula. All After School Program teachers are teamed into teaching pairs and are jointly responsible for instructing classes to 10-12 students. All teachers will be receive guidance and feedback from professional mentor teachers. Download an application to Teach in the After-School Program.
Tutoring and Volunteering
During both the Summer Program and the After School Program, high school-age tutors provide one-on-one academic support to Breakthrough students who either experience difficulty in mastering certain academic challenges or who have demonstrated an ability to advance more rapidly through the curriculum than his or her peers.
Breakthrough New Haven also employs volunteers for a wide variety of roles during the After-School Program and the Summer Program. These have included tutors, teaching assistants, database design and maintenance, development of publicity materials, and more.
If you are interested in tutoring or volunteering at Breakthrough New Haven, contact us for an application.
