One purpose of Breakthrough is to prepare high school and college students for careers in education. Consequently, the program encourages all prospective teachers to apply; no prior teaching experience is necessary. Before the students arrive at Breakthrough New Haven, teachers receive a week of full-time teaching at orientation. In addition to the week-long orientation, teachers receive much continued instruction as the summer progresses. In each department, a full-time professional teacher assists the Breakthrough teachers in planning curriculum and designing lesson plans, and evaluates classes.

Teaching at Breakthrough New Haven is an incredible experience. Because students must apply and be accepted to the program students are curious, interested, and excited to learn. Furthermore, teachers design and implement their own curricula. Teachers receive critical training and education and make friendships that last for years.

Teachers attend a one-week orientation program, teach for six weeks, and finally undergo a one-week conclusion and evaluation period.
