On Thursday evening, April 15th, the Hopkins Community gathered in downtown New Haven for two 350th Anniversary events: at the New Haven Museum the opening of a Hopkins exhibit and presentation of the Seal of the City; and at Woolsey Hall a grand Choral Concert.
"Hopkins School: Celebrating 350 Years," a retrospective of Hopkins history at the New Haven Museum opened last night in an elegant reception. At the event, Walter Miller, President and CEO of the New Haven Museum and Historical Society, presented Hopkins School with the Seal of the City Award. The framed wax seal was given to Hopkins “in grateful recognition of its contributions to the New Haven community” since its founding in 1660. Head of School Barbara Riley and President of the Hopkins Committee of Trustees, David Newton, accepted the award for Hopkins. Before the presentation of the seal, guests viewed the newly opened exhibit which includes portraits, artifacts, photos, manuscripts and furniture that tell the story of Hopkins through the years. The show was curated by Hopkins Archivist and History Teacher, Thom Peters, along with the New Haven Museum staff. The exhibit will be on view through August 31, 2010 and all Hopkins alumni/ae, parents, students and New Havenites are encouraged to attend to see how closely Hopkins evolution is tied with the city of New Haven.
Following the opening reception, the Hopkins Concert Choir, directed by choral director JoAnn Wich, put on a magnificent concert in Yale University's Woolsey Hall. The Hopkins Choir was joined by members of the Choate Choir and select accompanists from Yale. The expansive hall was filled with Hopkins folk and the jubilant voices of the choir lifted spirits in appropriate celebration of Hopkins' 350th anniversary. As the concert ended, the parents, faculty, staff, alumni/ae and students poured from the building and downtown New Haven buzzed with the energy of Hopkins School. It was a marvelous evening to celebrate Hopkins and this landmark anniversary.
