On Wednesday October 17th, while students in Grades 9 through 11 were busy with standardized testing and Seniors were attending a special program and college fair, the Junior School participated in Diversity Day. Organized by the Diversity Committee, the day was filled with open discussion, interactive activities, and insightful exhibits.
Students were treated to a presentation of the
In Our Family: Portraits of All Kinds of Families photo-text exhibit (photos by Gigi Kaeser and Text edited by Rebekah Boyd & Peggy Gillespie). According to the Family Diversity Project, the non-profit that created the exhibit, "
In Our Family is a museum-quality traveling photo-text exhibit about twenty families representing a breadth of diversity and family configurations... Designed for audiences of all ages - from early childhood to adults -
In Our Family challenges stereotypes and helps dismantle prejudice by celebrating and affirming differences of all kinds... The positive and realistic photographs, along with the candid interviews with family members of all ages, affirm an inclusive and expansive vision of family life today."
Co-founder and Director of the Family Diversity Project, Peggy Gillespie, also spoke to the entire student body during assembly on Monday, October 15. Peggy and teacher Errol Saunders engaged in a dialogue about diverse childhood experiences that sparked important discussion on the different types of families that make up the Hopkins community.
