Rocco DeMaio Named Athletic Director

Rocco DeMaio has been named Hopkins’ Athletic Director by Barbara M. Riley, Head of School. He succeeds Tom Parr who retired in June, 2015. DeMaio has been serving as Interim Athletic Director since Parr’s retirement.

In an email to faculty and staff, Ms. Riley wrote, “Early this past summer, when he stepped into the position of Interim Athletic Director, Rocco brought energy, vision, determination, and considerable skill to his new role. Those qualities have already resulted in some wonderful appointments in key coaching positions, as well as a new esprit de corps among coaches and Athletic Trainers in the Walter Camp Athletic Center.

I believe this is just the beginning of what will be a wonderful tenure for Rocco as Hopkins' Athletic Director and also a wonderful time for athletics at our school.”

DeMaio is a 1986 alumnus of Hopkins School. He graduated in 1991 from Trinity College where he received a B.A. in psychology. At both schools he was named Outstanding Male Athlete. DeMaio joined Hopkins as an adjunct coach in 1992 and was named Assistant Director of Athletics in 2002. He has served in a variety of coaching positions, including assistant football coach under Tom Parr for 23 years, head coach of varsity baseball (1995–2003) and varsity golf (2007–2015). He is presently head coach of varsity basketball.

"I’m honored and grateful for this opportunity to lead athletics at my alma mater," said DeMaio. "I’ve been fortunate to have had Tom Parr as my mentor and I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence he established into the future."

Referring to Kai Bynum, who is named 109th Head of School and will begin in July, 2016, Riley said, “Kai and I are in complete agreement that there could not be a better person to fill this crucial role than Rocco DeMaio.”
