Reunion 2016

Hopkins' 2016 Reunion took place on June 10-11, with more than 400 alumni/ae and guests returning to campus. Alumni/ae attended a luncheon under the tent, attended special programs led by Hopkins faculty, played in the Alumni lacrosse game, enjoyed family activities and the culminating point of Reunion: dinner under the Big Tent with a rocking musical backdrop provided by the Reunion Band!

Reunion began on Friday, June 10 with a reception at Swensen House for classes celebrating their 50th Reunion and above, as well as class-organized parties at local restaurants and homes.

School-sponsored events began on Saturday morning with a Run/Walk in honor of retired faculty, Clay Hall, and a special Adam Kreiger Adventure Program experience for the Class of 1991 and the Kreiger family. Morning programs also included a Back to Class Session with Rocco DeMaio '86, Director of Athletics and Don Bagnall, Assistant Director of Athletics and Athletic Trainer, updating alumni/ae on the Athletic program at Hopkins.

The annual alumni/ae luncheon took place under the tent this year. A short program of speaking included Head of School Barbara Riley who honored and introduced 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Vincent Volpe ’76. Vince Calarco, President of the Committee of Trustees, then introduced incoming Head of School Kai Bynum. To read more about Vince Volpe and the Distinguished Alumnus Award, please read this article from his visit to campus in the fall.

Following the lunch, families enjoyed activities on Pratt Field including an inflatable obstacle course, cornhole, face painting, balloon animals and fresh-popped kettle corn. Families and friends also enjoyed watching the alumni lacrosse game on Parr Field. Unfortunately the weather cancelled our other alumni/ae sports.

Afternoon events included two Back to Class Sessions: “The 2016 Election and 21st Century Democracy” with Assistant Head of School and History faculty John Roberts and Rafi Prober ’96; and “Hopkins on the Edge - Current Trends in Education Technology” with Katie O'Shaughnessey, Mathematics and Computer Science Teacher, and Ben Taylor, Science Faculty.

Also in the afternoon, the first meeting of the Black Alumni/ae Network took place in the Weissman Room. A group of over 30 alumni/ae gathered to reconnect and network and were joined by incoming Head of School Kai Bynum.

As the daytime activities came to a close, more Reunion alumni/ae arrived on campus for the evening's cocktail hour in Heath Commons and dinner under the tent. After dinner, Jim Lawson and the Faculty Reunion Band rocked the tent with classics from the decades. Band members were Ian Melchinger '88, Amanda Friedman, Ian Guthrie, Dan Gries and Jim Lawson. A special surprise performance by Harmonaires alumni capped the evening, with Sam Kuslan ’11 taking to the piano.

It was a successful and joyful Reunion for the hundreds of alumni/ae who returned to Hopkins, to reconnect with one another and catch up with life on the Hill.
