Meet the Admission Committee

The members of the Admission Committee at Hopkins fulfill a variety of roles as teachers, advisers, coaches, leaders of extracurricular activities, and admission counselors. I started at Hopkins in 2009 after a circuitous route to independent school admissions. I attended Duke University, then Washington University School of Law and was a practicing attorney for several years, and then an editor at a legal publishing company before finding my start in admissions at New York Law School. From there I moved to independent school admissions, spending 9 years at Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, before arriving here at Hopkins. I have been involved in admission work for more than 20 years and love opportunity to meet young people who are smart, talented, motivated learners and who join those qualities with kindness to others. My husband, Peter, who also works at an independent school, and I live in Deep River, CT with our two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Finn and Darby, and our Maine Coon cat, Murphy. Most of my free time is spent actively competing with the dogs in both AKC breed and performance events.

I began teaching French and Spanish in independent schools forty years ago and migrated to the admission office shortly thereafter. As the parent of two Hopkins graduates, I contribute the special perspective of a Hopkins' parent to the admission process. As a teacher, coach and adviser I am privileged to work with our talented and motivated students in and out of the classroom and have had the pleasure of chaperoning dozens of international trips. I marvel at the enthusiasm and purpose our students bring to all they pursue and I look forward to sharing their experiences with prospective families. Outside of school I am involved with many professional and community organizations and enjoy playing the steel drum, jogging and cooking.

I began my career at Hopkins in 1980 as a 9th grader. After Hopkins, I attended Wellesley College where I majored in Psychology. I began my career in admissions at Trinity College as the Director of Multi-Cultural recruiting. It was my job at Trinity that brought me back to Hopkins. After a recruiting trip to campus and reconnecting with many faculty members that played such an important role in my life as a student I returned to Hopkins in 1995 when I was hired as Hopkins’ first Director of Diversity. After nine years as the Diversity Director, I was excited to get back into the Admission Office full-time.. I enjoyed everything about my independent school experience and I get to share those experiences with people every day. My campus responsibilities include advising, overseeing our Parent Ambassador program, and assisting with all Admission Office programming. You can often find me in my office laughing, mentoring, or just spending time with our students. They are truly a remarkable group of young people. Katharine Higgins

I returned to Hopkins in the fall of 2009 after having spent 21 years at a boarding school teaching history, advising, coaching, running dorms, training prefects, and working in Administration as the Director of Residential Life, the Community Life Department Head, and an Assistant Director of Admission. I have always known that it was my experience as a Hopkins student that fostered in me both a love of learning and a desire to work in independent education. After earning a BA in International Relations from Bucknell and an MA in International Affairs from George Washington, I knew I wanted to return to an independent school and have an impact on the whole student in the same way that so many of my Hopkins teachers had inspired and guided me. After a long and rewarding career at boarding school, I was presented with the opportunity of returning to the Hill and helping many students begin their Hopkins journey. I could not help but feel as if life had come full circle. In addition to interviewing students, I train and organize the school's Tour Guides as well as coordinate the Visitor/Host Program. In my spare time time I love exercise and yoga, reading, and hanging out with my two black labs and my husband.

In 2014, I joined the Hopkins community as the Director of Diversity and Assistant Director of Admission. In addition to these opportunities, I also serve as a tutor in the Academic Support Program and coordinate Student Activities in grade 9–12. Born in Korea, I was adopted and came to America as an infant. I grew up in the suburbs of New York City and relocated to Connecticut for college. At the University of Connecticut, I completed an integrated Bachelors/Masters program in Education. I studied English, Education, and Women's Studies in undergraduate school and completed my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. For several years, I taught English in public school and helped to coordinate a cross-cultural exchange initiative, with sister school partnerships in China, France, and Japan. This lead me to independent schools where I served as the Associate Dean of Community Affairs, working in diversity, inclusion, global education, service learning, and student life at King Low-Heywood Thomas. I am delighted to now be a part of the Hopkins family! I have particular interests in singing and music (playing guitar, musical theater, and a cappella), identity and social equity, and traveling/facilitating trips abroad. My goal in life is to see and understand as much as this great wide world has to offer! I enjoy meeting new people and learning about their experiences, and thus I am incredibly excited to serve on the Admission team.

I joined Hopkins in 1989. I was looking for a place that felt like an extension of my family since mine was so far in Spain, and I found it in Hopkins. I love teaching Spanish to my eager students. My goal has always been to make class fun so that they look forward to each and every class. I joined the Hopkins Admission team a few years later. I love introducing families to Hopkins and talking about the wonderful place that it is. I am the 9th grade Head Adviser, so I get to introduce all new 9th graders to Hopkins as well. Errol Saunders II

Originally from Los Angeles, I began my career at Hopkins as a rising junior at Yale in the summer of 2004. That summer, I worked as a teacher-intern at Breakthrough New Haven, an academic enrichment program hosted at Hopkins serving talented students from the New Haven area who attend public and parochial schools. I worked for the program for three summers and volunteered for it during the remaining school years of my college career.
Even though I was a supposed to be teaching students at Breakthrough, in reality I learned more those summers than I managed to impart to my students. Aside from learning student-centered pedagogy or how to persevere when daunted by truly difficult tasks—good teaching is really hard—, I learned that I truly love every moment I spend in the classroom.  Most importantly, however, my work at Breakthrough New Haven taught me that I could make a life for myself serving others and have a blast doing it. Having grown up in a family that stressed the values of striving for excellence while taking personal responsibility to help others, my experience as a teacher-intern also exposed me to the perfect place to live out those values as an adult… Hopkins School.
I have been a faculty member of Hopkins since 2006. Since then, I have taught and advised in the Junior School, taught New Haven History in the Upper School—New Haven is my area of specialty—, served  on the Financial Aid and Admissions Committees, and continued working with Breakthrough New Haven as both the Assistant Director and History Mentor Teacher. In my spare time, I enjoy exploring cities, giving tours of New Haven, and attending community festivals, fairs, and celebrations wherever I happen upon them.

I have my sister Willa (Hopkins ‘80) to thank for launching my Hopkins career. When she learned from her chemistry teacher during the spring of her senior year, that there was an unexpected vacancy for a French/German teacher who could coach tennis and field hockey, my sister offered my name. Before I knew it, I left my position with a NYC philanthropist and committed to accompanying the girls Field hockey team to camp that June and signed on to teach both languages and fill the two vacancies left in the athletic department. The International business and language major, who had vowed never to be a French teacher, was headed to Hopkins never imagining the move would be a permanent career change. ("Never" is quite a capricious word and one that I often warn students about uttering.)
Fast forward: I have taught in our Junior, Middle and Senior school, but as with my advising duties have spent the lion share of my time in the Junior school where I am currently a Head Adviser. I have coached at the Junior school, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels and in the intramural program. With decades of experiences and cherished memories, I can firmly assert that it’s been a wonderful life on the Hill. As a teacher, adviser and Head Adviser, coach, admissions committee member, and proud parent, my time spent with students, colleagues and parents, has been enriching, invigorating, rewarding and FUN. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic fields, in the interview room or abroad with students in Quebec and Paris it is difficult to imagine my life without my Hopkins family. You may reach me at

Matthew Treat

I joined the Hopkins Admissions team in September 2011. After graduating from Hobart William Smith Colleges (Geneva, New York) in 1990, I began my teaching career at Avon Old Farms School in Avon, Connecticut as a math teacher, coach and residential faculty. In 1998, I received a degree in Special Education from St. Joseph’s College in West Hartford, Connecticut. With my teaching experience and degree in hand, I established and managed learning centers at the Renbrook School in West Hartford Connecticut and The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut. I also worked for seven years at Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut as the Director of the Rudd Learning Center. I am currently the Director of the Academic Support Program at Hopkins. During my years in the classroom as a teacher and director of various academic support programs, my mission has been to support students and teachers both in and out of the classroom. Finally, I am married to Holly McGlennon Treat, an educational consultant, and we have two children Andrew (12) and Amelia (9). Andrew will be joining the Hopkins community as a seventh grader this fall. We like to travel during the summer months to Gloucester, MA. Kristine Waters Schmitt

I came to Hopkins in September of 1997 as a math teacher and a junior school adviser, having taught for one year in public school after completing my Masters Degree in Education at Fordham University. In the fall of 2002, I became a Head Adviser and served as the Head Adviser to the Ninth Grade for several years, specializing in the transition into high school at Hopkins. It has been a privilege to guide each incoming class of intelligent, active, and caring individuals, as they have learned to navigate the academic, athletic, and social challenges that Hopkins offers its ninth graders. In the fall of 2012, I became the Head Adviser to the sophomore class and will continue as the Head Adviser to the students of the Class of 2015 through their graduation. In addition to teaching math and Head Advising, I have coached the JV Math Team and have been the Faculty Adviser to the yearbook. I became a member of the Admission Committee because I truly love teaching and working with the amazing students we have at Hopkins, and I wanted to have a part in shaping each incoming class. When I am not at Hopkins, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two children.
