MacMullen Coaches 500th Game

On a simply raw day for April- at least the rain held off- the Hilltoppers voyaged down I-95 to Westport to do battle with the Dragons of Greens Farms.  This has historically been a close contest, with Hopkins getting the better of it, so the team was determined and focused.  Hopkins got on the scoreboard only a minute into the contest on a nifty run by Alex McMahon- the first of three that he would tally.  At the end of one it was 2-0 visitors and only some terrific work by Greens Farms Bowdoin-bound goaltender kept it that close.  The hosts only managed two shots in the period thanks to some fine total team defensive effort, in particular D-mid Julian Marchese, LSM Mile Lourenco, and close defender Mitchell Patton.  (The three earned game balls for their efforts.).  This was the story for the entire game- Hopkins won face-offs- Grant Hill and Kamsi Nwangwu dominating- possessed the ball well to generate good shots (too many of which were saved), and played lock-down defense.  Only a score by the Dragoons in the last two minutes denied the rare lacrosse shut-out.  With three solid efforts under their belts, the Hilltoppers now look to long time rivals, the Tiger of Suffield, on Saturday.

A personal note from Sandy MacMullen:
This game is the 500th lacrosse game that I have coached at Hopkins.  I’d like to take the opportunity to say thanks.  Thank you to the ADs who have let me do my thing, who have given me guidance when I needed it, and who have been so supportive of the program through the years, especially to long-time AD Tom Parr.  Thanks to the many folks who have helped as assistants, from Eric Mueller (who came the same year that I did), through the 15 or so alums who came back for different lengths of stay, to Ford Cole (who has been at the helm with the JVs for 16 years) and to Adam Sperling. Thanks to the Athletic Trainers who have so wonderfully looked over the many boys who have come through the program and who have put up my prodding to get those same players back on the field, especially to Don Bagnall.  (“Whadya think, Don, maybe he can just play some extra man?”)  Thanks to parents who loaned me their sons for a little time, who supported their children by attendance in all manner of weather, and who helped with tailgates and team dinners.  Special thanks to the parents of the yearly captains.  Most importantly, a huge thanks to the hundreds of boys who I have been lucky enough to have spent some time with, many of whom have become good friends in their adulthood.
