Reopening Hopkins

Case Investigation and Notification Process

Upon learning of a confirmed case, a response team of school administrators will immediately convene to implement contact tracing and cleaning protocols in partnership with the Department of Public Health. A contact tracer, a Hopkins faculty or staff member certified through Johns Hopkins University’s COVID-19 Contact Tracing Program, will be assigned to the case. Currently, Hopkins has 15 certified contact tracers.

Following an investigation, all students, faculty and staff deemed to have been in close contact with the infected individual (within 48 hours of the infected individual’s symptom onset or positive test) will be informed and directed to quarantine and monitor for COVID-19 symptoms in accordance with Hopkins’ Quarantine and Testing Policy. Close contact is defined by the CDC as spending at least 15 minutes within six feet of an infected individual. If we maintain the physical distancing layout throughout campus, community members should not come in close contact during the day.

If you do not hear directly from a member of the Response Team, that means it has been determined that your child did not have close contact with this infected person.

After close contacts and their families and teachers are notified, an email will be sent to all parents, students, faculty and staff notifying them of the confirmed case and the subsequent steps completed by the Response Team. In accordance with HIPAA regulations, at no point will the individual’s name be shared with anyone outside of the Response Team.

We will work as quickly as possible to keep families updated and informed with accurate information. There may be times you hear of speculated cases and/or situations before we are able to authenticate facts. Please be patient with us as we work through our process. We will be as transparent as we can with our staff and families throughout this process while honoring confidentiality.

As a reminder, if your child is feeling ill, please keep them home.
