Carly '21

When a nurse in her neighborhood posted a note online about lacking adequate protective equipment, Carly ‘21 stopped scrolling and started sewing.

“She had just been given her last surgical mask and told to wear it until it disintegrated, so I made her a few masks," Carly said.

Carly is a talented seamstress who has helped created costumes for a number of Hopkins plays. In fact, her first batch of masks was made using fabric she had left over from props she created for the School's recent production of Spamalot.

"After that (first mask I made), I just kept making them for people who requested them online. Most of them were for people who were at risk in some way— people who worked in hospitals, as well as people with elderly relatives or compromised immune systems,” she said.

Carly sews whenever she can in between online classes, in the evenings, and on weekends, and says she will continue to sew until her fabric stash runs out.

“At this point I’ve probably made and distributed more than 100 masks," she said. "The response has been overwhelmingly positive; people have been really sweet. Some people made donations to the Connecticut Food Bank in my name. Some people have left flowers or jars of homemade honey when they pick up their masks. It’s all pretty heartwarming.”

Thank you, Carly, for using your talents to help flatten the curve in your local community.
