Culture and Community Day

Monday, December 5, was Culture and Community Day at Hopkins, a day to celebrate the varied cultures and backgrounds represented at the school.

In preparation for this assembly, S.U.R.E. (Students United for Racial Equity) sought responses from students and faculty, who were asked two questions: What communities do you belong to? And how has your community’s culture shaped who you are? Responses were recorded and compiled into the following video:

In their introduction at assembly, SURE Heads Ben Elbaum ’16, Caroline Stanley ’17 and Sabrina Trombetta “17 noted, “The video [above] offers a little insight into our community. Many students were nervous to be interviewed and told us that they had no heritage or culture, and that their cultural background was nothing noteworthy. We hope that the video proved otherwise. As our fellow students and teachers shared with us what they consider their cultural background and community, something they first thought of as ordinary became something unique and special.”

The assembly continued with the personal stories from Phoebe Cardenas ’17, T.J. Bordeaux ’17, teacher Mike Calderone, and Lizabeth Bamgboye ’20, as well as the calling of the flags, a Read Around the World initiative, and a performance by the 7th Grade Choir. See all of these stories and performances in the attached videos.

Many thanks to Amanda Friedman, Director of Diversity and the Heads of SURE for their efforts in creating a wonderful celebration of the many cultures in our community.
