Coach Elrick & HOP Swimming Reach 600 Wins

Congratulations are in order for long-time Varsity Swimming & Diving coach Chuck Elrick. With more than 34 years at the helm of the Hopkins Swimming and Diving program, Elrick earned his 600th win on Saturday, January 14, 2017 against Hotchkiss.

Chuck Elrick began his tenure at Hopkins in 1983. Before coming to Hopkins, Elrick was running the Mariners Swim Team in downtown New Haven. He had known of Hopkins, as he coached many Hopkins students for their independent athletic option. Elrick applied to Hopkins under the recommendation of former swim coach Bud Erich. As Chuck began his tenure here, many of the Mariners swimmers began to apply to Hopkins because of their contact with Chuck and exposure to the school.  Over the years many of the captains of the Swimming and Diving Team were also Mariners.  Chuck still runs the Mariners Swim Team, now out of the Bud Erich Pool here at Hopkins. Over time, as the Mariners became more successful, he found that more swimmers wanted to make their way into Hopkins.

A point of pride for Coach Elrick is that all of his swimmers participate in each meet.  His hope is that, over the course of the season, everyone sees some improvement in their times.  He is quick to point out that the success of the program is all because of the swimmers; they have earned the 600 wins!

Coach Elrick would like to thank Bud Erich for bringing this opportunity to his attention. He would also like to thank Hopkins and the Athletic Department for all of their support over the years.  Finally, he would like to thank his swimmers, each of whom he considers a friend.  Chuck knows none of this would be possible without them!

Congratulations to Chuck and the Swimming & Diving program for this amazing accomplishment!  GO HOP!
