Celebrating Chinese New Year

Hopkins celebrated the Chinese New Year on Wednesday, February 1 and welcomed the Year of the Rooster, which is the year of 4,711 in Chinese Lunar Calendar!

A joyful celebration in Heath Commons featured a dumpling-making and eating festival, a taste of a variety of Chinese snacks, a Chinese calligraphy workshop, Chinese games Mahjong, Chinese Yoyo, Origami making, picking up M&Ms using chopsticks, and a special paper cutting performance by Mr. Hou Tien Cheng. Mr. Cheng made custom masks and pieces of art for students and faculty with his skillful scissors cutting intricate details. To learn more about Mr. Chen, read this article from his visit in 2011

Over the course of the afternoon, over 1000 dumplings were made, and 600 big white rabbit candies, 500 fortune cookies and 300 rice crackers were eaten.

Ms. Lin, Ms. Li and Ms. Ran would like to extend a special thank you to all those who helped make the celebration a huge success:

- All the parents who donated materials, time and support.
- Jeffrey and Clarky Sonnenfeld (parents of Sophia Sonnenfeld '21)
- The maintenance staff
- Mike and his kitchen staff
- D. J. Plante and Anthony DiNicola
