First Day of the 2017-2018 School Year!

The 358th school year began at Hopkins on Tuesday, September 5, with an all-school assembly in the Walter Camp Athletic Center. Head of School Dr. Kai Bynum gave an opening day address, and welcomed all the new and returning students and faculty to an exciting year ahead. In his opening address, Dr. Bynum shared lessons gained in learning to surf, as well as encouraged students to take healthy risks this year. Watch his full address in the attached video.

Assembly continued with announcements from Assistant Head of School John Roberts, Student Council President Donasia Gray ’18, members of Student Productions and the Yearbook, as well as Art Department Chair Robert Smith.

The traditional ending to the first assembly of the year is a performance by a member of the senior class. Senior Madison Howard, accompanied by Director of Choral Music Erika Schroth, performed the 1st movement of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B Minor.  Please watch Madison’s performance in the attached video. Madison studies cello with Caroline Stinson at the Pre-college Division of the Juilliard School of Music and is the 1st prize recipient of several music competitions, including the International Grande Music Competition, the National Young Artists Chamber Music & Ensemble Competition, the Musical Club of Hartford High School String Competition, the Concerto Competition of Norwalk Symphony’s Orchestra Young Artists’ Festival, and the American Chamber Orchestra Competition.  She is also 2nd prize recipient of the Stamford Young Artists’ Philharmonic Concerto Competition and the Renee B.
