Hopkins Honors the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This morning, Hopkins honored the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a special assembly organized by SURE (Students United for Racial Equity).

The program began with an introduction by SURE members Gigi Speer ’18, Lionel Louis ’18 and Elena Brennan ’20, followed by a performance of “We Shall Overcome” by Ranaese Brown ’21 and Kayla Spearman ’21. Next, Lizabeth Bamgboye ’20 shared an original spoken word oration titled “Civil Disobedience,” which brought the audience to a standing ovation. Gunnar DeSantis ’20, Helena Lyng Olsen ’18 and Jasmine Simmons ’21 then gave a history of Dr. King’s life, before introducing Ranaese Brown ’21 who performed a moving recitation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which brought the community to their feet in applause. Gigi Speer then introduced a video clip of Dr. King speaking at the Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia on October 26, 1967, where he posed the question to the young students, “What is your life’s blueprint?”

Many thanks to SURE for organizing a moving and personal tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. King, and to advisers Amanda Friedman and Becky Harper.

Please watch video of the performances and recitations below.
