Football Preview - New Year, New Season, New League

Jordan Shand '19
August 20th started off a new season in every Hopkins sport with the majority of them competing in the FAA (Fairchester Athletic Association). However, this year poses a newer challenge for the Hopkins Football team. Led by captains Owen Sherman and Doug Guilford with Head Coach Tim Phipps, the Hilltoppers look forward to their inaugural season in the MIFL (Metropolitan Independent Football League).

The MIFL league brings together teams from the tri-state area and presents a new range of teams for the Hilltoppers. The MIFL divides the league into three divisions leaving the Hilltoppers in a division with former-FAA opponent Rye Country Day and Hackley. Captain Owen Sherman is determined to make an impact in Hopkins’ first season, stating, “I would like this team to leave a lasting impression on the
league this year that the team from CT is not to be messed with.”

The Hilltoppers will also have a chance at playing for the MIFL championship this year. The team in each division with the best record will go on to a two-round playoff with the championship in the first week of November. Captain Doug Guilford invites this opportunity, stating, “This is the first season in my Hopkins Football career where we could win a championship, which is a very inspiring opportunity. With that being said, my goal for the team is to not only win a couple league games but to win a championship.”
The Hopkins Hilltoppers are currently 2-0 with their next game coming up Saturday, Sept. 22, at Riverdale Country School.
