Hopkins Choristers and Musicians Shine at Battell Chapel

Under the majestic vaulted ceiling of Yale’s Battell Chapel, the Hopkins Art Department presented its annual Music of Winter concert on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 7 p.m. This year’s program included the premiere of the Treble Chamber Choir, a sixteen-voice ensemble of sopranos and altos. Their performance of “Tundra” by Ola Gjeilo was greeted with wild applause.

The Concert Choir, Junior School Chorus, Treble Chamber Choir and Hopkins Orchestra led music lovers through a 90-minute program ranging from Franz Gruber’s Noche de Paz (Silent Night) to Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro: Overture to Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride. (See full program below.) The evening concluded with Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

Concert Choir co-presidents Katie Broun ’19 and Kenny Lu ’19 spoke of their deep appreciation for the music program at Hopkins, thanking Choral director Erika Schroth for her dedication and making special mention of emeritus Choral director JoAnn Wich who was in attendance. Concertmaster Alexander Zhang ’19 and cellist Zachary Blake ’19 echoed similar sentiments, praising the leadership of Orchestra conductor and Chair of the Art Department Bobby Smith for transforming the orchestral music program at Hopkins.
