Spring Break Trip to Amalfi/Salerno Italy

From March 8 to 17, 2019, fourteen students traveled to Italy with Dr. Picarazzi and Dr. du Plessis.

During their trip they stayed in Amalfi and Salerno, on the Amalfi Coast. In Amalfi, they visited the Cattedrale di Saint Andrea, and learned that Amalfi and New Haven have twin feast celebrations in June dedicated to Saint Andrew. In Amalfi, students also enjoyed a hands-on paper making lesson at an ancient paper mill.

During their stay in Salerno, students visited the Cattedrale di San Matteo, as well as Pompeii, and Paestum, where they saw the Temples of Athena and Neptune. They also took a hike through the lemon groves of Il Sentiero dei Limoni, which links the Amalfi Coast towns of Maiori and Minori. In the mornings, students attended language and culture immersion classes at the Accademia Italiana in Salerno.

They met their student pen pals from the Liceo Scientifico da Procida, Hopkins’ sister school in Italy one evening, and also spent a full morning visiting their high school. In terms of food, the group enjoyed local delicacies, took a pizza making lesson at Hydra Ristorante, saw a demonstration on local sweets sfogliatella and babà at the famous bakery Romolo, and tasted artisanal gelato at Punto Freddo Gelateria. They also learned how mozzarella is made at a water buffalo farm founded in 1689. What an incredible adventure in Italy!
