Madeleine Walker ’19 Receives Scholarship for Gap Year in Morocco from U.S. Department of State

Madeleine Walker ‘19 has received the U.S. Department of State’s Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Scholarship to study for one academic year in Morocco after graduation. Walker decided in her junior year that she wanted to take a gap year before college and so she is extremely happy to have earned a scholarship for the highly selective year-long YES Abroad program.

This program will give Walker the opportunity to live with a Muslim host family in Rabat, Morocco, attend a private French-speaking high school, and study and learn Arabic. She will also participate in many cultural enrichment activities, including educational excursions to cities and towns including Marrakesh and Casablanca.

Gaining a stronger understanding of international affairs and U.S. relations with Muslim countries, and enhancing her personal and cross-cultural communication skills will no doubt be beneficial for Walker when she attends the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown as a member of the Class of 2024.

"When Madeleine first met with her college counselor, she said she wanted her next step to be an adventure,” commented Erika Chapin, Director of College Counseling. “No doubt, with this exciting opportunity, adventure awaits her!"
