Celebrating Spectaculum Romanum!

Hopkins’ annual Spectaculum Romanum took place in Upper Heath this year on Wednesday, May 15, with eighth grade students proudly showcasing their projects amidst a whirlwind of curious spectators. Their project displays covered a wide range of topics from Roman times including lots of food for sampling, weapons, mosaics, medicine, roads, aqueducts, army tactics, fashion, domestic life, and architecture.

Following the presentations in Heath, the 7th and 8th graders broke into small groups to participate in a series of activities. These included learning calligraphy, playing board games and quiz games, painting mosaics, writing a rap battle, crafting wands and classical spells, making cement candleholders, as well as constructing miniature catapults. The catapult groups ended the festivities with a mini-marshmallow battle in front of Thompson Hall.

A special thanks to Kate Horsley and the entire Classics Department for producing a memorable and informative journey into ancient times.
