The Hopkins boys and girls' XC teams traveled to New Milford, CT on Saturday, September 25 for the Canterbury Invitational. Both the boys and the girls had a strong day on Canterbury's notoriously challenging course. The invitational is a varsity-only event, with a stronger division 1 race, and a somewhat less competitive division 2 race. Sophomore Ava Maccaro was the first Hopkins finisher in 10th place, running about a minute faster (20:58) than she had on the same course two years prior. Next in for Hopkins was freshman Sarah Galvani-Townsend in 22:10. The third Hopkins girl was senior captain Saraswathi Navaratnam-Tomayko in 22:29. Ninth grader Laila Kenkare ran 23:04, followed closely by sophomore Anna Capelle, credited with the same 23:04 time. The 6th and 7th runners for the Hilltoppers were senior captain Nana Dondorful-Amos and junior Ingrid Slattery. The team performance was good enough for 4th place overall, behind Loomis Chaffee, Sacred Heart (Greenwich) and Winsor School. All in all, a good return to invitational racing for the Hopkins girls. Boys In the boys' race, junior Luke Brennan shadowed the lead pack, running a successful, gutsy race and 20+-second PR to finish 8th in 17:19. Senior captain Will Cooper also ran a big PR to finish 9th in 17:28. The third Hopkins runner was junior Adam Hagens in 18:18 (16th place), with senior Evan Migdole right behind him in 18:19. Sophomore Silas Resch finished 21st in 18:28, with freshman Logan Matthews right behind in 18:29. Senior Nati Tesfaye ran a strong PR in 18:46. This was a very strong performance for the Hopkins boys, who had not run that well at Canterbury in at least 15 years. To compare, Hopkins' seventh runner in 2021 ran about 25 seconds faster than their third runner on the same course two years ago in 2019. The performance earned the team a third place finish, behind Hotchkiss and Loomis Chaffee, both of which run in NEPSTA division 1. Hopkins was the fastest NEPSTA division 2 team in the race, and the season looks very bright for the Hopkins boys. Hopkins' next race for boys and girls is an FAA meet on Wed 10/6. After that they will run in the Manhattan College XC Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in NYC on Sat 10/9.
