Honoring Veterans Day and Michael Thomas '86

Hopkins was honored to host Commander Michael Thomas ’86 at today’s Veterans Day Assembly. 

Commander Thomas spoke to the community about the history of Veterans Day, and how, for him, although he appreciated the recognition for his service, the day stirs mixed emotions, bringing back memories of friends lost in the line of duty.

 

He also emphasized to the students that the military is just one of many forms of service; that through their own talents, interests and professions, students have the ability to create opportunities to serve others, both within their own communities and in the world at large

 

Commander Michael Thomas graduated from Hopkins in 1986 before going on to Wesleyan University for his undergraduate degree and Yale Law School for his JD. From 1995 to 2012, he served as a Commander in the US Navy. During that time, Commander Thomas was deployed three times and received many honors and medals for his achievements and service, including a Bronze Star, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. After his active service concluded, Commander Thomas continued to serve his country by working hard to support veterans here in Connecticut and across the nation. 

 

Dedicated to supporting education, Commander Thomas served on the Hopkins Committee of Trustees, as well as the board of Achievement First Public Charter Schools.
