Hopkins Announces its Next Head of School, Dr. Matt Glendinning

Dr. Matt Glendinning Will Become the 110th Head of Hopkins School

NEW HAVEN— The Hopkins School Committee of Trustees has announced the appointment of Dr. Matt Glendinning as the 110th Head of School of Hopkins, effective July 1, 2022. Glendinning will replace Dr. Kai Bynum, who has served as Head of School since 2016.

The announcement comes after an extensive search process that began in June 2021 when Dr. Bynum announced that he will be departing Hopkins following the 2021/2022 school year.

Glendinning will join Hopkins from Moses Brown School in Rhode Island where he has served as Head of School since 2009. He comes to Hopkins with experience in strategic planning, creative thinking, and educational leadership as cornerstones of his well-recognized career. A respected individual on both the national level and within the broader independent school community, Glendinning has presented at major national conferences and has been published widely.

At Moses Brown School, Glendinning’s accomplishments have included enhancing the school’s curriculum with technological and socially innovative approaches; expanding programming for health, wellness, and individual student support; helping to build state-of-the art facilities such as a performing arts center, maker space, and library; dramatically growing endowment and scholarship opportunities; significantly increasing racial and socio-economic diversity; and ensuring that equity and inclusion are integral to professional development and practices.

Previously, Glendinning served as Head of Upper School at Moorestown Friends School in New Jersey and Director of the Cambridge Prep Experience in the UK. A former faculty member at Phillips Academy (Andover) and Germantown Friends School, Glendinning has taught ancient and medieval history, Latin, Greek, and archaeology.

“We believe that Matt’s proven leadership experience, commitment to academic excellence, lifelong love of learning, as well as his passion for supporting and inspiring all members of a school community will be an exceptional fit at Hopkins,” said Vince Calarco, President of the Hopkins Committee of Trustees. “Matt will raise the Hopkins community to new heights with his collaborative spirit, innovative thinking, and passion for excellence,” he added.

“I look forward to getting to know all members of the Hopkins community and to partnering with you to advance the school in areas such as global and experiential education, access and affordability, wellness, facilities design, and deepening involvement with the city of New Haven and the larger Hopkins community,” said Glendinning in a letter this afternoon.
