Congratulations to the High School Science Bowl Club!

On Saturday, March 19, two teams of Hopkins high schoolers competed in the Connecticut/Rhode Island High School Regional Science Bowl. Hopkins’ two teams were selected from a group of 20 students who attended weekly practices over the past several months.

Science Bowl, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, is an academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science and math. High school students are quizzed in a fast-paced question-and-answer format similar to the game show Jeopardy. Competing teams consist of five students with a coach/teacher for each team. Instead of an in-person head-to-head bracketed competition, this year teams competed in separate virtual spaces (via Zoom). The competition was a sudden elimination style tournament where only those teams with the highest scores could move on to subsequent rounds.

Out of 36 teams, the Hopkins B Team finished in 18th place, just missing out on qualifying for the elimination tournament. The Hopkins A Team finished 9th in the preliminary rounds, qualifying for the Elimination Round of 16. The team managed to defeat highly distinguished programs from around the state, such as Choate Rosemary Hall, Loomis Chaffee, Greenwich High, and others. The team reached the semifinals round, where they ended one question shy of making it to the final, and finished in third place. A big thank you to our faculty advisor, Mr. Taylor, for supporting our club over the last three years!
