Alum Fellow Steven McDonald '04

Hopkins was honored by a visit from Spring Alum Fellow Dr. Steven McDonald '04 on Monday, April 24, 2023. Dr. McDonald is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and a board-certified Emergency Room Physician. In his assembly address, he spoke to the community about his career path in medicine, and how his experience working as a resident at both Bellevue Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in New York opened his eyes to inherent biases and inequality in medicine, and limitations people of color face in getting sufficient medical care. His experiences have led him in recent years to use his voice and privilege to raise awareness of these issues and become an advocate for equality in medical care. Watch his full assembly address in the video below.

Throughout the morning, McDonald visited classes in African-American History & Literature, Hopkins Authentic Research Program in Science (HARPS), and Spanish Honors Seminar, where he continued the conversation with students and faculty. McDonald's visit concluded with a luncheon in the Weissman Room with students, faculty and members of the Alumni Fellows and Distinguished Alumni Committee.
