This Wednesday, the Top 6 of our squad returned home very late to Hopkins with a very special delivery: a new "baby" they named the New England Championship trophy. I'm sure that it'll prefer some sort of nickname once it gets older....

The Hilltoppers traveled all the way to Groton, MA to take on the Groton School, the team who beat us last year in the quarters by a handful of tiebreaker points, and the same team who has won quite a few of these tournaments in recent years. Play began at 3 and Hop took the doubles point fairly quickly, as Max/Lucio and Teo/Andy put into practice all of the doubles strategy they learned during our practices.

Singles commenced and the matches were close. Alex put up an impressive fight but ultimately was defeated by without doubt the strongest player in the #3 position we've seen all season. All other singles matches were interrupted at 5:15 PM, however, as the heavy rainstorm that had been predicted for the last few days became a reality. Play resumed an hour later once the indoor courts were free. Capt. Andy was first to finish with a solid "W" for us, and his victory spurred on his teammates, all of whom were in the midst of tight matches with onlookers all shouting for Groton. Lucio fought valiantly against an unbelievably steady player, but came up just two points short of a victory. Max made use of all the tools in his wheelhouse---big serve, spin, power, footwork, angles, you name it--to figure out how to close it out down from 4-5 in the second set. Jay, who had taken the first set easily outdoors before his opponent rallied to 4-0 in the second, had begun to find opportunities indoors. Even though he lost the second set, the Force was with Jay as he was working his way into the tiebreaker...

Teo had dropped the first set outdoors before finding his rhythm and getting comfortable in the second. Once play resumed in the hockey rink, Teo continued to rally close with his opponent, and claimed the second set. In the final tiebreaker, fans were treated to some of the best high school tennis that has been played in the Northeast in some time, as both opponents battled with heavy spin and pace, and found angles that are hard to hit on the run. Neck-and-neck they fought, with Teo losing three match points before finally getting the win 12-10, sealing the victory.

Congratulations to ALL the boys on the TEAM. You all earned this victory, with focus, determination, grit and teamwork. We cannot be any prouder of you. YEAH HOP!!!
