Jacoba Urist '94 Honored as Hopkins Alumna Fellow

Jacoba Zelinsky Urist, Class of 1994, has been named an Alumni/ae Fellow for 2015–2016. Ms. Urist is an art, culture, and health journalist for The Atlantic and NBC NewsShe has also written for The New York Times, Newsweek, and The Wall Street Journal.

The Hopkins Alumni/ae Fellows Program seeks to enrich the Hopkins learning experience by exposing students to prominent graduates who will inspire and challenge students by sharing their life experiences.

Ms. Urist visited campus on Friday, October 9, 2015, and addressed a student-wide assembly. In her talk, titled "The Art of the Zig Zag", she mapped her own professional journey as a series of “zigs and zags”. Starting from an original desire to be a writer, she "zagged" to a stint in public policy, followed by nine years practicing law, to an eventual “zig” back to “where I felt ready emotionally to do the kind of writing I wanted to do.”

Ms. Urist cited Peter Ziou’s AP Art History class with having a seminal influence on her approach to writing—Ziou taught her the practice of sitting in front of a work, (or a problem, or a question) and letting your thoughts coalesce and take shape. She also acknowledged Thom Peters and emeritus faculty member Susan Feinberg for informing her Hopkins experience. The three teachers gathered for a photo with Ms. Urist immediately following assembly.

Ms. Urist also met with members of The Razor staff and she participated in three classes—Philosophy, Literature and Moral Ideas, and The Holocaust. The day concluded in the Weissman Room where Ms. Urist was joined by her brother Nathaniel Zelinsky ‘09, and her mother Doris Zelinsky for a luncheon with Barbara Riley, faculty members, and students.

Ms. Urist's presentation, The Art of the Zig Zag, was videotaped and is available on this web page.
