Hopkins’ 2024 Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Dale Caldwell ’78

Hopkins’ 2024 Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Dale Caldwell ’78, spoke at an all-school assembly on February 12. During his speech, Dr. Caldwell inspired students to become a positive influence on others, live a purposeful life, and to create change in the world by celebrating everyone’s differences. After the Assembly, Dr. Caldwell visited humanities and social justice classes, held a Q&A with students and faculty in the library, and toured the tennis and squash courts.

Dr. Dale Caldwell serves as the President of Centenary University in Hackettstown, NJ, and the Pastor of Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield, NJ. He is the Founder and Board President of the Dale Caldwell Foundation, focused on reducing poverty through education and entrepreneurship. With over 33 years of experience as a K-12 public school board president, Dr. Caldwell has authored eight books and is the founder of the management consulting firm Strategic Influence LLC. He also holds the position of Founding Executive Director at the nonprofit organization Newark Alliance. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Caldwell is deeply involved in the world of tennis, having served on the Board of Directors of the US Tennis Association (USTA) and becoming the first Black president of the USTA Eastern Section. Notably, he founded the Black Tennis Hall of Fame to acknowledge individuals overlooked in history due to their race.

The Distinguished Alumni Award
The Distinguished Alumni Award, established in 1991, honors alums who have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment in their chosen fields, and service to their communities. Hopkins continues to be an institution committed to fostering those qualities that come from a liberal arts education: learning how to learn, how to think clearly, how to express ideas effectively and how to work independently. Today, as throughout the school’s history, students learn that knowledge should be tempered by ethical judgment, consideration for others and aesthetic sensibility; that far greater than academic achievement and preparation for college are a sense of curiosity and a love of learning; that intelligence and training carry with them the obligation to serve others. The Distinguished Alumni/ae Award salutes individuals who exemplify these qualities.
