Hopkins Science Olympiad

Hilltopper's Guide
This past Saturday, around forty of us woke up before the sun rose to travel to Hartford, CT. We had our array of binders, papers, and builds with us, and we donned maroon t-shirts bearing our unofficial motto (and general philosophy to approaching life): Duct Tape and Hope. We were the few, the proud, the Hopkins Science Olympiad team.

This past Saturday, around forty of us woke up before the sun rose to travel to Hartford, Connecticut. We had our array of binders, papers, and builds with us, and we donned maroon t-shirts bearing our unofficial motto (and general philosophy to approaching life): Duct Tape and Hope. We were the few, the proud, the Hopkins Science Olympiad team.

Out of the myriad of extracurricular activities Hopkins offers, Science Olympiad (affectionately known as SciOly) is one particularly unique and special to many who spend their days here on the Hill. The Hopkins SciOly program includes in total more than fifty kids who love science, and get to further their passion by preparing for SciOly competitions. The preparation entails of studying intriguing subjects like protein modeling or forensics, or building intricate contraptions like a robot arm or a Rube Goldberg machine.
The SciOly team was up and running at such an early hour this Saturday because it was the day of the Connecticut State SciOly Competition, which was to determine which team would represent the state of Connecticut in the 2016 National Science Olympiad team. Ever since a motley of enthusiastic teachers and students created Hopkins’s SciOly program in 2008, Hopkins has had great success, attending Nationals for seven years in a row.
This year’s state competition day had its high and low points, and in the end, all had a great time. Hopkins came away with more than twenty medals (awarded to those who placed 1st-4th in their event), and the A and B team placed 2nd and 3rd respectively out of 44 teams. Although we won’t be attending nationals, the achievements of our two teams this year demonstrates the depth and strength of Hopkins’s program.

Science Olympiad has been a fun way to mingle with incredibly bright students, glean nuggets of random scientific knowledge, and generally feel a love of science coursing through my veins. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is ever interested in science, math, or how the world works!
