College Counseling at Hopkins
Navigating the process together....
“Hopkins provides an individual, personalized, and reflective process to help students realize their post-graduation college goals.”
At Hopkins, the discussion and decision of where to apply to college is part of an ongoing conversation that is often part of everyday life, but the process does not formally begin until the winter of junior year.
Even as a highly competitive college preparatory school, we believe that focusing narrowly or rigidly on college admission too early in high school can get in the way of a student’s long-term development and happiness. Once we begin the process,we focus our work to:
Assist students and their families in finding a number of good college "matches" - places where students would feel challenged, happy, and satisfied.
Demystify the college search and application process, and to help students understand how they fit into the world of college admission.
Help admissions officers to understand and appreciate the competitiveness of the Hopkins curriculum.
Students have their first official contact with the college counselors during the winter of junior year. Juniors are given an overview and introduction to the college search and application process in a class meeting. At this time, they are also given access to Naviance. After completing an extensive, self-reflective questionnaire, juniors may schedule individual meetings with their college counselor. Parents are welcome to meet with their child’s college counselor after that initial meeting. Juniors and seniors work closely with their college counselors throughout their remaining time at Hopkins.
