The Hop Hive, Madeleine Cahn ’17, Deepak Gupta ’18 and Nicholas Schoelkopf ‘19, won best student team at the 5th Annual New Haven Reads Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the winning word “asceticism.“ Hopkins also fielded a faculty team, The Bee Gees, represented by John Lytle, Carla MacMullen and Hop mascot Sarah du Plessis. The Bee Gees successfully spelled "cinematheque" but were eliminated on the second round with "aardwolf."
Forty one teams, comprised of representatives from local New Haven organizations and businesses, took to the stage on Friday, October 21, at the Yale School of Management to compete. WTNH-TV anchors, Ann Nyberg and Keith Kountz were on board to host.
