Hopkins runs over Kingswood-Oxford

NEW HAVEN — If the Hopkins football team gets its ground attack into full throttle, the opponent usually is in for a long afternoon.

Unfortunately, for visiting Kingswood-Oxford, it was a lesson learned the hard way.

Junior Chris Stewart and Senior Andrew Parr were ferocious on the ground and Hopkins remained undefeated with a 47-6 Fairchester League Nutmeg Division triumph Saturday over the West Hartford school.

Stewart rushed 31 times for 268 yards and five touchdowns and Parr had 13 carries for 123 yards and a score.

Hopkins (6-0, 2-0) amassed 444 yards rushing for the game.

"They (Stewart and Parr) are pretty good. They cover and block for each other in the backfield," Hopkins coach Tom Parr said. "Plus, our offensive line grew up a little bit today and did a great job. We did a good job of controlling the trenches."

Said Kingswood-Oxford coach David Hild: "They (Hilltoppers) did a great job up front. Their lines, offensive and defensive, beat us up all game long. We had a hard time containing their two runners (Stewart and Parr)."

For Hopkins, David Brotman started the scoring in the first quarter, when he ran it in from 5 yards out at the 39-second mark.

But it was Stewart’s three second-quarter touchdowns on runs of 5, 8 and 6 yards that built the Hilltoppers a 26-0 halftime lead.

"We did our scouting and knew they were a good football team. This was a big step for us today," coach Parr said.

Hopkins erased any thought of a Wyvern comeback when Parr scored on a nifty 31-yard run with 7 minutes, 50 seconds left in the third quarter. A Kier Goodrich conversion kick gave Hopkins a 33-0 edge.

Kingswood-Oxford (4-2, 1-2) then responded with its only points when Jared Lambert scored on a 7-yard run.

A missed conversion left a 33-6 deficit.

"They did a great job of bottling up Jared (Lambert)," Hild said. "We tried a few different things, like putting him at quarterback and using the no-huddle offense, but we, obviously, weren’t very comfortable with it." Stewart went back to work with two more scores. A 38-yard run at the end of the third quarter gave Hopkins a 40-6 lead. Stewart then added his fifth score on a 41-yard run with 6:45 left, finishing the scoring at 47-6.
