The Hopkins girls' cross-country team traveled to the Governor's Academy in Byfield, MA on Saturday, November 10, for the NEPSTA championship races. The soggy conditions already in place, in combination with the heavy rains that fell the night before the race, almost led to race cancellations, and did in fact require substantial last-minute re-routing of the courses on the part of the host school.
The varsity girls ran first. The varsity team of Maliya Ellis, Hanna Szabo, Elena Brennan, Kaitlin Forman, Julia Sotelo-Emery (running varsity for the first time this year!), Yasmin Bergemann, and Inge Hughes ran solid races, with particularly sparkling performances from Maliya, who placed 5th overall, and Julia, who was understandably nervous about running varsity for the first time ever, at New Englands. Maliya earned all-NEPSTA honors and with that a place in the all-star race this weekend. It is the fourth all-NEPSTA honor for Maliya. The race was challenging: a combination of muddy and hilly, but with substantial portions on pavement, to avoid the sections of the course with mud so deep they were unrunnable. The girls placed 5th of 17 teams.

The JV girls also had a strong day. Seventh-grader Ava Maccaro finished 5th overall! Junior Mei Han, who had been battling a sore calf ran a strong race for 20th place, with Lily Meyers right behind her in 21st. Katherine Takoudes, returning from a long illness that had kept her out of FAAs, was 31st, and Ellie Medovnikov was 45th. Just behind her was Gracie Theobald-Williams in 47th. Kallie Schmeisser was 51st, Emma Regan 80th, and Nora Schmitt 82nd. The JV girlsran a different course from the varsity, with more pavement and fewer hills, and which was also about 150m short of 5k, making the times on the results somewhat deceptive, and not allowing them to compare effectively with the varsity times.
