Mountain Goats Tame Tigers

For the last 10 years, every time Hopkins has played Suffield, we have seen a tough game, with fierce competition and regardless of the outcome which is usually a close score, very little left on the field for both teams. This year was no exception.

The Mountain Goats (a.k.a. the Hilltoppers) had obviously no intention of being eaten alive by the Tigers as they took control of the game early. Becky Harper caught a poorly cleared ball one minute and a half after kick off and surprised Suffield's goalie. Not to be outdone, three minutes later as we failed to guard a loose ball, Stephanie Shaker pounced on it and surprised Romy. But six minutes into the game, since Becky was definitely "on" she capitalized on a quick pass from Caroline and found the back of Addie Kozlovsy’s net for the second time.

Things settled a bit then and we saw Hopkins play great combinations which frustrated many times Suffield's defense in spite of their efforts to close the seams. At the 26 minute, after a scramble and quick exchanges in Suffield's box, Annie Svigals put the end of her foot on a ball from Becky and scored our third goal of the day.

Going into the intermission, we knew that Suffield would reorganize and come at us roaring (which is what Tigers do!) so we were ready for the onslaught. It came! From the 40th minute-on, Suffield players pushed hard and at the end of a counter attack which saw Hopkins defense off-balance they managed to tighten the score midway through the second half.

The last stage of the game saw a reenergized Suffield battling hard to tie the game and Hopkins playing tough defense. The HIlltopers prevailed eventually and the score remained 3-2 in their favor.

A great game once again with strong performances from players mentioned above and also from all our midfield and our defense which were all stand-outs today.

Our last three games have exemplified what team work is all about. Weather permitting; we are going to Saint Luke's Saturday for our last season's game. They are at the top of the "S" division in WWNEPSSA and they have just won the Fairchester League's Championship; needless to say we will take that game seriously.

What ever comes later will be the icing on the cake! !
