The Girls JV squad ran into a dominant Choate team in Wallingford. The Choate team has yet to lose a match this season (previous outing against Loomis Chafee was also a 7-0 win), and despite some strong performances by the Hopkins Girls JV squad,Choate's perfect record was not threatened. Across the board, individual weaknesses were exposed by a skilful and determined opposing squad. Most notable performance was Davida Judelson’s three set effort which held out Hopkins’s last hope of avoiding the whitewash. In the lead singles, Katie Fellows again showed great form in succumbing to a more tactically astute opponent. Rachel Copel’s consistent game got her to a tie-break in the first set, but ultimately was insufficient against her opponent's strong attacking game, and Catherine Aeppel’s net rushing got her a 4-0 lead before her opponent got into her own groove to win the next 12 games in a row. In the doubles, Sasha Burger and Bohwoo Kim were unable to penetrate their opponents’ net game, Laura McNamara and Natalie Baumann lacked the consistency to get into long rallies, and Bohree Kim and Jessica Moffett put up a good fight, eventually succumbing to a strong top doubles pair. Bohree adopted an interesting tactic by serving underhand into the sun all afternoon, severely testing the patience of the opposing receivers who did their best to blow shots past a fearless Jessica at the net – usually hitting their returns hard into the net. Greatest challenge of the afternoon was off-court where hunger pangs from team manager (for the day) Cassandra Kennedy spread though the rest of the disconsolate team. Fearing an ugly ride home, Coach Pham and Ken, the van driver, headed off into the wilds of Wallingford to find a convenience store stocked with all the food groups (chips, chocolate, and Snapple). With the dire emergency averted, the team returned in good spirits, ready to fight another day (maybe after a little more practice)…
