Boys New England Prep School Tennis Tournament

On Saturday, May 27th, singles player and co--captain Phil Bernasek and the doubles team of David Zackheim and Baris Sevinc traveled to the Choate campus in Wallingford for the season--ending New England Prep School Invitational Tennis Tournament. Rains had come through the night before and the day turned out to be an unexpectedly hot and humid one.

Phil Bernasek represented Hopkins and handily defeated opponents from Taft and Kent before coming up in the semi--finals against post--graduate player and #2 seed from Cheshire Academy, Christian Coley. With diligence and determination, Phil managed to win the first set 6--3 before gradually tiring in the early afternoon heat and humidity and coming short in three closely contested sets. For Phil's persistent play, he earned a 4th place singles finish in this New England Prep School tournament.

The Hopkins doubles team of David Zackheim and Baris Sevinc also set out to do their best and found themselves facing a team from Williston--Northampton School that had unexpectedly upset a favored doubles team from the host Choate school in the first round of play. The team from Williston--Northampton suddenly jumped out to a 3--1 lead and nearly made it to 4--1. But then Zackheim and Sevinc steadied down their ground strokes and Zackheim became more active and adventurous at the net position. Slowly but surely, the tide turned, and Zackheim and Sevinc eventually wound up victorious by a 10--5 score.

Then our Hopkins doubles team found themselves facing the top two players from Phillips Andover Academy--both seniors who were in their 4th seasons as members of the Andover varsity tennis team. Zackheim and Sevinc fought hard but found themselves on the short end of a 6--3, 6--1 decision. But in the playoff for 3rd and 4th place in New England doubles, Zackheim and Sevinc were able to prevail against a steady and sound team from Salisbury School by a close 8--4 margin, to take home the 3rd place doubles title.

All in all, this has been a great season for our overachieving 9--3 tennis team, and with all but our #5 singles player and co--captain Adam Blythe returning to Hopkins for next season, the future prospects for our team remain promising. JV Coach Kyle Gardner is to be commended for taking time out of a Saturday on Memorial Day Weekend to come to help coach and support our team at this tournament. Kyle was a huge help!
