On April 25th, the Hopkins boys' tennis team made the one hour trip up to West Hartford to play their counterparts from Kingswood--Oxford School. Because of impending rain, a decision was made to play the singles matches first. Hopkins responded by winning all 6 singles matches in straight sets; Baris Sevinc at #4, 9th grader Bobby Berkowitz at #5, and 8th grader Jerrod Dobkin at #6 were particularly impressive in winning their matches without so much as the loss of a single game.
Coach Ewen then gave co-captains Phil Bernasek and Dan Spinelli a chance to rest during doubles play, since the match had already been decided. Baris Sevinc and Jerrod Dobkin took advantage of the opportunity to play #1 doubles by defeating Kingswood's top two players 8--7 (7--5 in the tiebreaker). Senior Todd Lebov joined David Zackheim in winning at the #2 doubles position by a score of 8--5. And, at #3 doubles, eleventh grader Marty Keil and Bobby Berkowitz continued their undefeated ways by blanking their Kingswood opponents 8--0.
Next on tap for Hopkins is an away contest vs. Trinity--Pawling, in Pawling, NY, on Saturday. Then come two key matches against potentially strong opponents St. Luke's (Monday), followed by Suffield Academy (Wednesday). These two matches promise to have a large bearing on whether Hopkins will receive an invitation to the New England B Team Championships or not. Hopkins' team record now stands at a respectable 5--2.
Hopkins is a private middle school and high school for grades 7-12. Located on a campus overlooking New Haven, CT, the School takes pride in its intellectually curious students as well as its dedicated faculty and staff.
