Congratulations to the Hopkins Chess Team for their 2nd place finish at the 2008 Connectciut State High School Chess Tournament held at Yale University on March 9, 2008.

It is important to note that the Hopkins team was a real powerhouse in their first team appearance in a chess tournament in about 30 years. Comprised of just four students, the Hopkins team of Patrick Hulin '10, Leon Wang '10, Michael-David Mangini '10, and Peter de Groot '11 scored a total of 12 points; just 1 point behind this year's first-place team which had ten players.

Also, Michael-David Mangini was awarded the 10th Grade State Champion for 2008 at Yale. In addition, he was awarded 3rd Place overall in the individual high school standings. He recieved a plaque and an individual trophy, while Hopkins recieved its first team trophy in some 30 years.

Jim Celone '79, the Tournament Director of the State Chess Championship, was especially pleased to see Hopkins's success with a four-member team that barely missed first place and nearly ousted the reigning champions West Haven High School.

Well done!
