Snow flurries and a cold north wind made this victory all the more sweet!
We settled down nicely, took command and kept the ball in their half for the first 10 minutes.
The middies distributed the ball well, but our forwards tended to pass into where the Hornets could pick up the ball. We seemed less aggressive than usual. “Frozen” hands forced some girls off the field. During the substitutions, the HH Hornets carried the ball down to our end. They had a free hit right outside the circle and a player deflected the ball into our goal. Our defense was caught off guard. Hopkins came off the field at halftime down one goal. Our players admitted that they could demand more from themselves. The sun broke through the clouds. parents fortified the girls with, oranges and Gatorade, and our Hilltoppers ran back onto the field before the umpire had signaled an end of the half-time, so ready were they to fight back! We controlled the ball, passed wide and hustled to looses ball. Kate, Dani, Miela and Izzy had good drives on the free hits. They demonstrated that they know now how to cut off angles and double back when the our backs attack. All the forwards were reaching better- Lily and Meg as inners- and all played more aggressively. The wings-Abi and Ashley- found open spaces- and swarmed the net as cherry pickers.
1st Goal:
Lily brought the ball down the field, passed to Dani who passed it on to Kate. Kate passed ball back to Dani who pushed it forward to Abby. Abby redirected the ball into the goal. SCOREEEE!
Shortly thereafter we got our second goal to put us in the lead. A penalty corner was awarded to Hopkins when the HH defense fouled in the striking circle. Ashley took the corner hit with a well-placed slap to Lily. Lily stopped the ball dead and passed back to Ashley who anticipated the pass and centered the ball right in front of the goal where Izzy was waiting. Izzy stopped the ball and pushed it into the goal right through the legs of several opposing players. GOALLLLL!
A few times during the second half the Hornets came into our end. We saw great defensive hit-outs from Melanie (25+ yards-flat and fast). Anna and Sara and Genna (who also played wing!) never backed down from the attacking offense and kept their sticks on the ground to avoid hacking; each time they took the ball away.
Neaer the end of the game, the Hornets paid our goalie another visit. When they came knocking at the door, Cadence cleared the balls beautifully. She had a magnificent clear that went almost half the length of the field! Time ran out and the girls ran off the field screaming for joy. This was another hard fought game with a story book ending.
