Over the month of April, poetry was celebrated around campus, from student recitations at assembly, a special guest speaker and a poetry slam.
Hopkins was abuzz with poems and stanzas for the month of April. Below are some highlights of Hopkins celebration of National Poetry month:
Student recitations - At almost every Monday and Friday assembly in April, a student took to the podium to recite a poem of their choosing. Notable readings include Bryan Pannill's '10 recitation of Taylor Mali's Miracle Workers, and who could forget Lonnie Herrera's '10 impeccable reading from memory of T.S. Eliot's lengthy poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Special Guest Jean Valentine - The Celebration of Poetry Committee invited New York State's Poet Laureate Jean Valentine to share her recent works with students and the Hopkins community on April 27th. For more information, see the article on Jean Valentine's visit posted earlier in the week.
CT COLT Competition - The Connecticut Council Of Language Teachers (CT COLT) held its annual poetry recitation competition on April 27th at Wilbur Cross High School. Many Hopkins Language students participated in the competition, with over 20 receiving awards for their performances in nine different languages. For more info on the COLT Competition and results, see the article that will be posted later this week.
The Canterbury Tales - Every year the 10th grade is charged with memorizing a portion of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in the Olde English dialect to recite at assembly. Led by English teacher Ian Melchinger, and joined by some older classmen, the 10th grade recited the lines with vigor and pep at assembly on April 30th.
Poetry Slam - The second poetry slam of the year took place on Friday, April 30th in the Weissman Room with students and teachers reciting poems continuously from 11am–3pm.
