Hopkins Renegade Knights Chess Team Wins the 2011 Greater New Haven Fall Open!
This past Saturday 10 members of the Hopkins Renegade Knights Chess Team competed on the Hill when the School hosted the 2011 Greater New Haven Open Chess Tournament.
This past Saturday 10 members of the Hopkins Renegade Knights Chess Team competed on the Hill when the School hosted the 2011 Greater New Haven Open Chess Tournament.
From a field of over 55 scholastic chess players in CT, junior sophomore Daniel Frndjibachian, placed 1st, winning the U1200 Section with a perfect 5-0 score, while freshaman Garret Ballard and sophomore Corey Chang placed 3rd and 4th respectively in the U1000 Section. Seventh grader Sean Gao took home the 2nd place trophy in the U800 Section, giving the Hopkins Team a solid 1st Place and winning the Top Team Trophy.

Each contestant received a complementary Hopkins Greater New Haven Chess set (in Hopkins colors, of course!) One of the photos shows the students picking up their chess set!
Hopkins will be hosting the 2012 CT Open State Chess Championships and New Haven Scholastic Championships Sat. March 31.
The chess team meets Tuesday afterschool in Thompson and Wednesday during activity period. All those interested in learning or improving their game are welcome.
The chess team is coached by Capt. Jim Celone HS ’79, Yale ‘83. Congratulations to our chess team on a job well done!
