Hopkins' 2013 Reunion took place on June 14–15 this year for classes ending in 3 and 8, with more than 400 alumni/ae and guests returning to campus. Alumni/ae attended a luncheon in Heath Commons, took campus tours, attended special programs led by current Hopkins faculty and students and many also played in athletic games.

For many alums, Reunion began on Friday, June 14 with class-organized parties at local restaurants and homes. School-sponsored events began on Saturday morning with a 50th Reunion breakfast and tour, as well as a Run/Walk for retiring faculty Clay Hall. In addition to a cookout, alumni/ae athletic games, campus tours and children’s activities, there were many special programs. In the morning, a group of alumnae from the women's schools gathered in Thompson Hall to hear former faculty members Betty Bradley Benedict '40 DAY and Heidi Dawidoff. The two women discussed the process in compiling their book, A History of the Girl's Schools of New Haven: Day, Prospect Hill, and Day Prospect Hill Schools, as well as facilitated a discussion from the gathered alumni/ae about their memories of the schools.

Approximately 150 guests attended the annual alumni/ae luncheon in Heath Commons where Head of School Barbara Riley presented the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award to Dr. George McLean Milne, Jr. '61 HGS, who's work in the fields of chemistry and pharmacology have changed the face of modern medicine. Milne addressed alumni/ae with a talk titled "The Future of Biomedical Innovation." Click here to read about Dr. Milne's address.

Afternoon events included a lecture by faculty members Ian Melchinger '88 and Josh Brant '88 on how recent brain research has affected teaching at Hopkins; a student panel discussion; and chess games in Heath Commons with the Hopkins Chess Team.

Many younger alums returned to campus to play in lacrosse, baseball or softball games on the outer fields with their fellow sports alums and former coaches. The alumni lacrosse game was played with a record high 9 goalies and players representing 4 decades for a fun-filled 60 minutes on the field. The relatively low numbers didn't diminish the excitement of the softball players when Cindy Chase '75 arrived (post neck surgery) to cheer her girls and Bill Ewen hosted another enjoyable tennis round-robin. The baseball players had the chance to strut their stuff for coaches Parr and Hart and reminisce about when 9 innings felt too short.

Late in the afternoon, over 100 alumni/ae, faculty, family and friends gathered in Heath Commons to honor Ralph "Doc" Kirchhofer, the legendary former wrestling and football coach, teacher and mentor to generations of Hopkins alumni/ae. This special event was organized by his devoted former students and friends to honor him with an endowed scholarship fund in his name. Jamie McAndrews '72 HGS announced that over the past year, friends of "Doc" raised a total of $300,000 to begin the "Ralph "Doc" Kirchhofer Scholarship Fund." This fund perpetuates Doc's legendary legacy at Hopkins and provides financial assistance to a student who demonstrates the values that he instilled in his students and wrestlers, including a commitment to strive for personal excellence under all conditions and valuing that effort in others. Additional photos and video from this event can be seen at www.hopwrestling.weebly.com

As the daytime activities came to a close, more Reunion alumni/ae arrived on campus for the evening's cocktail hour and dinner under the tent. The Harmonaires and the Teacher Band provided the musical entertainment for the evening. The Teacher Band rocked the tent with classics from the decades. It was a successful and joyful Reunion for the hundreds of alumni/ae who returned to Hopkins, to reconnect with one another and catch up with life on the Hill.
