Hopkins heads to Science Olympiad Nationals

Today the Hopkins Science Olympiad team heads to Florida to participate in the 2014 Science Olympiad Nationals. Read on to find out about their first place State competition triumphs as well as the Chemistry Olympiad results.

State Science Olympiad
For the 6th year in a row, Hopkins Science Olympiad took home the first place trophy in the state competition at the University of Connecticut. The competition was fierce as the team beat out South Windsor, for the third year in a row, for top honors. The margin was only 8 points! Hopkins entered two teams and overall took home 18 medals, seven gold (in events such as Anatomy and Physiology, Forensics and Mission Possible), three silver (in events such as Astronomy and Circuit Lab) and eight bronze (in events such as Elastic Glide Launcher and Technical Problem Solving). A team of fifteen students and four alternates will be heading to the University of Central Florida to compete in the National Science Olympiad on May 16th and 17th. Wish them luck!

National Science Olympiad
During the weekend of May 16th and 17th, nineteen Hopkins students will compete in the 30th Science Olympiad Tournament at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Fl. Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 25 team events. Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. In 2013, Hopkins placed 29th out of 60 teams with the best team score in Hopkins' history. Hopkins has participated at both the State and National levels since 2009.

Chemistry Olympiad
During the weeks surrounding Spring Break, a number of AP Chemistry students (current and former) took the Local Chemistry Olympiad exam sponsored by the American Chemical Society. The test consists of 60 multiple choice questions. Two Hopkins students did well on the exam and qualified for the National Chemistry Olympiad exam. Only two students (maximum) are allowed per school and only ten students in the area qualified. Ben Koleske (class of 2015) and Avi Mahajan (class of 2014) (along with approximately 1200 other students nation-wide) recently took the national exam competing for about twenty spots to head to the training camp this summer to prepare for the international competition this summer. Congratulations to Avi for qualifying for the national exam for the second year in a row! Amazing! We are awaiting the results of this national competition.

Thank you to Sarah Leite and Jen Stauffer, Faculty advisors to Science Olympiad. Good luck to our Nationals Team as they head to Florida!
