On Saturday, January 10, the Loomis-Chaffee boys varsity squash team traveled from their Windsor, Ct. campus down to New Haven to take on the Hopkins team. Loomis had defeated Hopkins 5--2 a year ago, but Hopkins was hopeful of improving this year.
The match began auspiciously enough with senior co-captain Alex Liu at #2 winning the first game against Loomis' Alex Steel, and with freshman Gyan Maria also winning game number one at the number four singles slot. Simon Doss-Gollin at #6 wound up losing a tight first game. But as the match wore on, Loomis slowly but surely began to gain the upper hand. Alex Steel controlled play at #2 with a convincing comeback, 7/11, 11/4, 11/6, 11/6. Alex Cohen at #6 used excellent court position to defeat a hustling Simon Doss-Gollin, 11/9, 11/8, 11/3. And in the longest match of the day, Hopkins' Gyan Maria finally got Hopkins on the scoreboard, regrouping in the final game to edge Loomis' Tyrese Evans, 11/6, 11/6, 15/17, 2/11, 11/7.
Now the #3, 5, & 7 players took to the court. Will Simon hustled around the court at #7 but found himself faced against an adept volleyer in Loomis' Samir Agadi, dropping a close three game contest 11/9, 13/11, 11/7. Will McLean found himself matched with a steady and persistent opponent and dropped a close 11/9, 7/11, 11/9, 11/6 match. And sophomore Matt Fiedler worked hard to gain a 2 game to 1 advantage over Loomis senior Peter DeLalio but was unable to sustain his momentum and lost, 3 games to 2.
Junior co-captain Spencer Lovejoy earned a second point for Hopkins at #1 singles by dominating Loomis #1 Will Pepi, 11/3, 11/4, 11/1.
There will not be much rest for Hopkins as the boys varsity team travels to King on Monday for yet another match, followed by a second away match at St. Luke's on Wednesday.
