Choate Conquers Hopkins Hilltoppers 6--1 in Varsity Boys Squash

Hopkins began its 2015 squash schedule by making the 15 mile trip
north on Interstate 91 to the town of Wallingford to take on the
Choate varsity boys team.  It was clear from comparative scores
(Choate beat Kent 4--3 while Kent toppled Hopkins 7--0, with both
matches taking place in December) that Choate was a deep and
experienced team.  And their team certainly lived up to their
 expectations.

Matches began at the #2, 4, 6, and 8 positions.  Alex Liu at #2, Matt
Fiedler at #4, Simon Doss-Gollin at #6, and Will Simon at #8
[exhibition] all lost their contests 3--0.  Matt Fiedler at #4 played
a strong first game losing 10--12, and Simon Doss-Gollin hustled hard
in his contest, losing a close 10--12 decision in his third and final
game, but that was as close as any one came in the first round.

Then the #1, 3, 5, & 7 matches followed in the second round of
contests.  At the # 3, 5, & 7 positions, the results were essentially
the same, with Choate winning each of these matches by game scores of
3--0.  Michael McCarthy at #7 singles dropped a close 10--12 decision
in game one before bowing more handily in games two and three.
The one bright spot for Hopkins this afternoon was junior co-captain
Spencer Lovejoy, who dispatched his freshman opponent, Robinson
 Armour, by a convincing 11/3, 11/6, 11/7 score.

Our team's upcoming contest with Loomis-Chaffee on Saturday at
the Kneisel Squash Center promises to be close, since both Hopkins and
Loomis were defeated 0--7 by Kent on Kent's home courts, and both
Hopkins and Loomis lost to Choate on Choate's home courts by identical
1--6 scores.  Hopkins will have its work cut out for it, as Loomis did
best Hopkins 5--2 at Loomis one year ago at the Loomis squash courts.
But this year Hopkins will be the host team, so the match should prove
to be interesting for both teams.
