On Saturday, February 28, the Junior School Science Quiz Bowl team participated in a statewide competition at UConn. Over 30 teams from across Connecticut gathered to compete in an academic quiz bowl tournament and car racing competition.
The car racing team of Zubin Kenkare ‘19, Nathan Ahn ‘20, Ian Dailis ‘20, and Blake Harrison ‘20 built a lithium-ion battery car that carried a cylindrical salt container on a 20 meter track. You can watch the video of their car taking first place with a photo finish!
Over the course of the day, students on our two academic quiz bowl teams answered between 300 and 500 questions on topics such as chemistry, biology, earth science, and energy. The day began with a round robin tournament in the morning and then a double-elimination championship tournament in the afternoon.
One team, consisting of Sydney Hirsch ‘19, Ben Washburne ‘19, Josh Seidner ‘20, and Alex Zhang ‘19, had a record of 6-1 in the morning tournament and finished in the top 10 in the championship tournament. Hopkins’ other team, with Ben Levine ‘19, Adwith Mukherjee ‘19, Nick Schoelkopf ‘19, Ethan Silver ‘19, and Ryan Viores ‘19 was undefeated in the morning tournament, earned the top seed in the championship tournament, and placed second overall!
Their coaches Kristen Amore, Jen Stauffer (both from the science department), and Julia Rowny (math department) couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and great sportsmanship and look forward to competing again next year!
