HOPKINS LADIES RETURN VICTORIOUS FROM VIKING TERRITORY 2-0

Another beautiful but hot day saw the Hopkins varsity squad earn their first victory of the season as they traveled to Stamford to play King School.

The ball moved fast on the hot turf and the game started early with repeated assaults from the Hilltoppers against the Vikings. Although the visitors had the run of the play with several attacks led from the flanks with Liz LOFFREDO ’16 and Lena GERRITZ ’17, it took a while to find the back of King’s net. This eventually happened with eighteen minutes left in the first half, when Emily YIN ’18 after a deep run made a great pass to rookie Lilly FAGAN ’20 who came out of nowhere to volley the ball passed the King’s keeper. Although Hopkins had several chances to increase the score, it remained at 1-0 until the second half. With a few counter-attacks from the host team turned around by the stalwart Hopkins defense composed today of Erin KNOX ’18, Aline KO ’18, Sophia FITZSIMONDS ’20, Unique PARKER ‘18 and Julia BARTIMER ’16. Of note, Julia had to defend often against her sister, Callie BARTIMER, King School number 24. Julia came on top of that sibling rivalry for the day!

The second half saw several attacks form Hopkins. Leading the way were among others, Emily YIN and co-captain Mia CIARDIELLO ’17. After repeated runs through the King’s defense, co-captain Alex McCRAVEN ’17 found the back of the net thanks to a well directed pass from Sonni FITZSIMONDS ’18. Sonni was very active today, defending and attacking tirelessly.

The lady Hilltoppers celebrated their victory with a profusion of cookies and other snacks brought by several parents who had made the trip to Stamford; their attention and support was most appreciated!

Our next challenge will be on the road again as Hopkins will take on Rye Country Day on Saturday, September 22nd.
