The Hopkins Drama Association brought high-energy hilarity and suspense to the stage with its production of The 39 Steps, performed in the APAC Theater from April 24–26. Adapted from the Alfred Hitchcock film, this fast-paced stage version offered a delightful mix of mystery and comedy, blending the intrigue of a classic thriller with the absurdity of Monty Python-style humor. The cast of 22 student actors showcased versatility, playing multiple roles with the help of rapid costume changes, physical comedy, and clever timing.
Under the direction of Hope Hartup and with technical direction by David Kenton, the production dazzled with its many scene changes, inventive sight gags, and imaginative stage effects. The crew’s behind-the-scenes efforts were as vital as the performances on stage, ensuring that the transitions were seamless and that every laugh landed. From the shadowy chases to slapstick moments and unexpected plot twists, the entire ensemble demonstrated remarkable teamwork and theatrical skill.
