Girls Foilists win 1st and 3rd, are seeded 1st for State Team Championships. Two more fencers win All-State honors. All 4 squads qualify for the State Team Championships this weekend.
The Connecticut High School Individual Fencing Championships took place at Hopkins this past weekend, with over 200 men and women foilists and epeeists participating. By day's end, 4 Hopkins fencers fought their way into the 8-person medal rounds to win All-State honors for themselves. All four Hopkins 3-person squads had strong enough individual performances to qualify for this week's season-ending CT Team Championships at Ledyard High School in girls' and boys' foil and epee.
The best performance was by the women's foil squad, with sophomore Nicole Kogan winning the State Foil Championship over 68 entrants. Nicole was closely pressed by squadmate Laura Srivichitranond in 3rd place. Emma Campbell-Mohn, fighting injury, reached the round of 16, which assured our girls foil trio a first place seeding for this week's State Team Championships. Last year, these same three won the State Foil Team Championship, probably the youngest squad ever to do so.
Along with Kogan and Srivichranond, All-State honors were won by senior Lucian Wang, who took a career-best 4th (out of 61 entrants) in men's foil, and by junior Gleason Ryan's 5th place in women's epee (41 entrants). Wang's foil squad is seeded 5th for the upcoming team event, while the boys and girls epee squads are seeded 6th for the Team States, the first time in a few years that all four Hopkins squads have qualified for the Team State Championships. They go into the Team States with the motto “Beat your Seed.”
