Office of Equity and Community Hosts Immersive Social Justice Trip to the Southwest

This June, Hopkins students explored the Southwest on a social justice trip to Arizona. From June 7 to 12, the group toured iconic landmarks such as Saguaro National Park and the Grand Canyon, gained firsthand cultural insights from local guides and community activists, and engaged in thoughtful dialogue about Indigenous communities, immigration, and climate justice.

A highlight of the trip was visiting the Arizona-Mexico border in Nogales, Arizona. While there, students learned firsthand about the challenges and complexities of the border wall and its impact on various communities, including migrant families, Indigenous communities, local and international governments, and students like themselves in the area.

The trip was led by Becky Harper, director of the Office of Equity and Community (OEC), and Dante Brito, associate director.

According to Harper, it was a week of learning, adventure, and meaningful conversation.

“The group was phenomenal,” Harper said. “The students were so kind and caring to each other. Dante and I are so proud of them.”
